Than you for your article, I found it gave me a new insight.
The theology behind the motivation for Hamas must be dismantled. I would be interested in your thoughts on this article. Hamas primarily would need to be persuaded. Are there any avenues of communication?
Dear Hellish 2050, thank you for reading my article and I am glad you appreciate it. I read the article you sent me. Since you asked for my thoughts I will summarize them. I am not a religious person and am not concerned with religious texts. Of course, I welcome anythng that does not deny our right to live where we are living and anything that will convince Moslems to stop hating us and desiring to destroy us. In my view, there are both Jews and Arabs (Moslems,Christians, Druze and Bahai) living in this tiny land and I would love it if we could all live together in peace with respect. Because the Jewish people have been persecuted for 2000 years many Jews would like to have a country of their own with their army to protect them. Since our neighbors are hostile to us and clearly declare that they want to kill us, it is difficult to trust them. We would also like to have a democratic state because we believe the people should determine who their leaders are and what their government does. Presently democracy is in danger in Israel. the constant hostility around us also influences many Israelis and makes them more aggressive. There are also those Israelis who believe a distorted version of our religion and think that we should devout ourselves to constant war and control of neighboring areas. Although this is totally impossible for us to actually manage, some crazy people in Israel, who are presently in the government desire that. If Israel is a democracy and there are also nonJews among us, especially those who have a high birth rate as Moslems do, we are in danger of finding ourselves ruled by democratically elected Arabs who are hostile to us. This is what we call "the demographic problem". That is why sane, progressive peace seeking people like myself would prefer to have a small Jewish State living peacefully with our neighbors.
you can contact me at nsteinfeld@gmail.com and we can continue to talk about this heartbreaking problem.
I can see that Israel does have a demographic problem. As I see it, at some point Israel must decide: Is it a Jewish state, or is it a democratic state? It cannot be both.
I have read the two Hamas Charters. People tend to think that the second supercedes the first. My own thoughts on this is that the second is an addendum to the first, rather than a replacement. The reason is this: the first quotes numerous Islamic scriptures to justify its genocidal ambitions. Nobody has any authority to delete or disregard those scriptures, therefore the first charter cannot be disregarded. They bot call for the removal of Israel, and so they are de facto stating the same message, just in a different form.
I am doubtful that Hamas can be removed, even if most Hamas members are killed. Because the ideas underpinning Hamas would still exist. It is those ideas that have to be destroyed. As described in my article.
yes we are all aware of the situation. I think the majority of israelis would prefer it to be a jewish state, that was the whole point of establishing it. therefore, the only way to do that is to have a small state with only a minority of non Jews. This has been the position of the Left and center in israel since its founding but the religious right apparently believe that somehow god will make it happen. I very much regret this way of thinking. It could lead to the total destruction of the Jewish State.
From an outsider perspective I find it strange that the most religious were exempted from military service. You would think that they would be the most enthusiastic to serve.
I understand there was a court ruling last year, ending this exemption.
But if they had voluntarily served enthusiastically, there would have been no need for the court ruling.
Muslims see it as their religious duty to serve in the military.
Islam has a very distinct demographic advantage: The Koran states that husbands can fertilise their wives whenever they want. In other words, the wife has no control over her own fertility. Not consistent with modern concepts of feminism!
In my opinion the ultra orthodox is like a cult, under the rule of their rabbis. These people believe that they must wait for god to save them and not be active in their own survival. There is an element if corruption in these communities where the members are purposely left ignorant and passive. Some of them oppose Zionism and the State of Israel because they believe they must wait for the coming of the messiah for the rebirth of their country. Bring on this national rebirth is considered by them to be a sin and not “real” Judaism.
At the beginning of the state, after most of the ultra orthodox were exterminated by the Nazis, those who came to Israel and other places wanted to devote themselves to rebuilding these communities. They feared army service not because they are pacifists but because they feared that mixing with others who live differently would influence their sons to abandon their strict medieval ways. At first they were tolerated out of respect but eventually they formed their own political parties, which were small but necessary for putting together coalition governments. So under to construct a coalition they were bribed into supporting and joining various government coalitions with an r emotion from army service. At first those not serving were a small group and the army managed without them but their community has grown significantly because they have a lot of children. Also they demand exemptions from army service even when they are not really devouring most if their time to religious study. If they don’t get this they threaten to leave the coalition government which would cause it to fall.
in Israel serving in the IDF is a very respected obligation however these ultra orthodox refuse to serve while also demanding a lot of financial support for their institutions. There is a great deal of anger in Israel today at these people who refuse to give a hand in such difficult time
